You have probably seen some TikTok or Instagram video about this young lady who explained having purchased a wig from an Amazon store and ended up in the emergency room.

She explains that the wig she purchased from Amazon has allegedly given her molluscum contagiosum which is a skin infection. While we do not know if it is actually the case, It is always a good idea to wash your human hair wigs or hair extensions before wearing them and we are going to see why in a moment.

Early Days

When I used to buy wigs, way before making my own, I would always make sure that I wash them thoroughly before wearing them because, at the end of the day, you never know where that wig has been. Now that I create my own wigs, this has become a habit of mine to make sure that I thoroughly wash and condition all Mimi et Mina Hair Couture’s human hair wigs and hair extensions for my lovely clients.

To be honest, this should be a basic sanitary requirement.

Let's see some reasons why you should always wash and condition your hair pieces before wearing them.

Reasons to Wash a New Wig or Hair Extensions

There May Be Chemical Residue

Certain suppliers actually use chemicals to coat hair strands on human hair wigs or hair extensions. While these treatments can seemingly make hair strands look shiny and “healthy”, they can leave behind residual traces that can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, or other undesirable effects.

Imagine what these chemicals could do when in contact with your scalp or with your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin. This is why I made the choice to stay clear of such chemicals and only supply raw hair instead of heavily silicone coated hair.

These foreign substances can accumulate on the scalp, leading to itchiness, redness, or even more severe reactions in individuals with sensitive skin or allergies. By properly cleansing the wig or extensions, you eliminate these potential irritants, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable wearing experience

There May Be A Strange Smell

The manufacturing process of human hair wigs often involves the use of various chemicals and treatments to ensure the desired look and longevity of the wig. However, these processes can leave behind a residual scent that may be unpleasant or even overwhelming for some individuals, especially those with a heightened sense of smell.

It's not uncommon for new human hair wigs to have a distinct, chemical-like scent that can be off-putting to sensitive individuals. This scent can be attributed to the residues left behind by the processing agents used during the human hair wig or hair extensions’ creation. While the smell may not be harmful, it can certainly detract from the overall wearing experience, making it less enjoyable.

The Shipping Conditions May Be Unsanitary

When it comes to purchasing high-quality human hair wigs, it's important to consider the journey these precious tresses have undertaken before arriving at your doorstep. During transportation and handling, wigs may encounter various conditions and environments that could potentially compromise their integrity or cleanliness.

You have probably seen images and videos of hair extensions being handled, laying on the floor in factories, and this is one of the reasons why it is imperative to make sure that you thoroughly wash it first, just like you wash new clothing before wearing it.

Upon receiving your new human hair wig, it's advisable to thoroughly inspect it to ensure it's in pristine condition and free from any issues or contaminants that may have been introduced during the shipping process. This step not only enhances safety but also gives you peace of mind knowing that your investment is in top shape.

If you notice any concerning factors, such as an unpleasant odour, discoloration, or visible debris, it's crucial to address these concerns promptly. Don't hesitate to reach out to the supplier or manufacturer for guidance and potential resolution. Your safety and satisfaction should be their top priority when it comes to delivering high-quality human hair wigs.

In Conclusion

Investing in high-quality human hair wigs or extensions is a significant commitment, both financially and emotionally. These luxurious tresses deserve proper care and attention to ensure they maintain their beauty, lustre, and longevity. Washing a new wig or set of extensions before wearing them is a crucial step that should never be overlooked.

At Mimi et Mina Hair Couture, we treat each hair piece, whether it is a human hair wig or hair bundles, as if it were for a friend or family member. An apparently small detail such as a clean and sanitised human hair wig means everything to us when we present our wigs to you. Each one is a labour of love.

Until next time,

Bisou,
