How to care for your natural hair underneath a wig

Wearing wigs is a very good way to protect your natural hair, give it a break and allow it to grow. While wearing wigs it is very important to look after your hair underneath whether you have cornrows or not.

Here my top tips when you are wearing a wig:

  1. Wash your hair weekly with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner
  2. Treat your scalp and hairline by moisturising it with a nourishing hair oil every 2 days
  3. Do not sleep with a wig on, use a satin or silk bonnet
  4. If you have had some breakage, it’s a great way to leave your hair to grow and recover from the damage.

Our Silk Bonnet is created exclusively to protect your natural hair, leaving you feeling fabulous wearing it.

Mimi et mina silk bonnet to protect natural hair

Personally, wigs are my favourite protective hairstyle, it allows me to have my hair into cornrows and let it do it’s thing.

I moisturise my hair with hair oils 3 times a week, I talk about my top favourite hair oils and serums here. Before using the oil I make sure I use a water bottle, that helps the oil penetrate my scalp and get that deep nourishment.

However, wearing cornrows is not the only option, you can leave it out to have versatility.

In this case, you should invest in a hot head heat cap when you are doing wash day. Leave your conditioner under the cap for 30 minutes before rinsing and blow drying. If you don't like using heat, you can twist out and let it dry naturally.

Make sure you visit the salon every 3 to 4 weeks to have a salon treatment and hair looked after by a professional stylist.
